NewsMonster supports the following features.

User Interface

  • Three pane interface when viewing channels. This supports using native Mozilla XUL controls and viewing RSS channels similar to Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Mail and News.
  • Organize feeds by folder or sort order.
  • RSS auto-discovery support for finding feeds within a page
  • Mouse or keyboard driven interface. All option can either be activated by the mouse (via right click or the NewsMonster sidebar) or with the keyboard.
  • User defined images for channels with the ability to override the existing image or provide an image for a channel which does not provide a default.
  • Unread article counts for channels and the ability to mark a channel read. This will allow you to see, at a glance, which feeds you need to catch up on.
  • Subscription Manager with advanced sort options including sort by most recently updated, unread articles, total articles, reputation, etc.
  • Find commmand for searching through all current subscriptions. This is similar to the find command in Mozilla Bookmark Manager. This will allow NewsMonster to act as a news database allowing you to find old news and discover cached articles. This will also allow you to find all information on a current topic from all your subscriptions.
  • Support for favicons for channels and articles that support them.

    Standards Support

  • Support for all RSS versions and popular extensions (content:encode, xhtml:body, etc) .
  • Support for Trackback posts.
  • Automatic blogroll and mod_subscription support detection for weblogs that do not support this functionality. This will allow NewsMonster users to blogroll directly within NewsMonster and while offline.
  • Import from OPML
  • Integrated with the RSS validator for easy validation of any feed

    • Network

  • Support for proxy servers including authentication.
  • Support for HTTP conditional GET to reduce bandwidth (HTTP 304)
  • Support for HTTP redirects (HTTP 301)

    • Aggregator

  • Ability to run the aggregator in the background and have it automatically fetch new news.
  • Fully integrated into the Mozilla but with the power of Java and Jakarta server-side technologies.

    • Reputation and Profile

  • NewsMonster Profile allows you to exchange your News Popularity Index and blogroll with other NewsMonster users and aggregators.
  • My Weblog Universe - New feature which attempts to discover weblogs and RSS channels within your network vicinity (less than 2 degrees). The user can then blogroll within their universe and we also use implicit reputation to discovery high reputation articles.
  • Channel browser for weblog suggestions based on popularity.
  • Implicit reputation support for exchanging your reading list with your subscribers.
  • Online profile support for synchronizing your blogroll with a server.

    • Search

  • Search channels in the subscription manager
  • Full-text search of all articles stored locally
  • Support for Technorati and Feedster search.
